Saving Orlaya Seed

This post is part of my series on saving cut flower seeds.

Please see the Save Your Own Cut Flowers post about methods for selecting, harvesting, processing, and storing your seeds!

Orlaya

Orlaya grandiflora

I’ve found that my orlaya always germinates better from saved seeds—and that it likes to self-sow over the winter (fine by me, as overwintered plants seem taller and more vigorous). To save seed, simply allow the plant to put out its crazy star-like seedheads and wait for them to turn brown and dry. Then rub the seed off into a labeled bucket. No further processing is necessary.

You should get a good amount of seed that will be much less expensive than buying it in and will germinate like a dream. Store in a freezer if you have space, or in a cool dark place that has a stable temperature.
